What to Do if Your Domain Name is Already Taken

Anyone who has registered a domain has most likely gone through the frustrating process of trying to find a domain that was not previously registered. If you are seeking a popular name, this can be incredibly frustrating as you go through your list of possibilities and find it narrowed to a domain name that you may not particularly like.

However, just because a domain name has already been registered doesn’t mean there are not ways of purchasing this domain. You’ll need to be prepared to spend a little extra money, but if the domain name is worth it to you, this is money well spent.

There are several people who register popular domain names in bulk in the hopes of selling these domains to the highest bidder to make a profit. In fact, there are companies that have turned this practice into a lucrative business, making thousands of dollars every month selling these domain names.

But how can you tell if a domain name is really for sale?

First, if the domain name you want has been previously registered, try typing the domain into your browser to see if there is a site associated with it. If you come up with a regular page that contains content and looks as though it is being used, the domain name will most likely not be for sale.

However, it doesn’t hurt to contact the owner, just to see if it is available before giving up. Many site owners aren’t as attached to their domain names as you are and they may be willing to sell you their name if the price is right.

If there is no page associated with the domain, your chances of being able to purchase it are much higher. A domain name that is not being used is an expense that the current owner may not want to keep paying. If you can offer to purchase this domain, you may actually be doing them a favor. It is a good idea to contact the owner with the proposition of purchasing their domain to see if they are interested.

If the domain name comes up with a placer page or a parked page, your chances of purchasing the name are even better. Many people purchase domain names and then use their parked or placer pages to advertise the domain name for sale.

If this is the case, don’t waste any time contacting the current owner to see how much they are asking for the domain name. Chances are, if you are interested in it, someone else may be as well.

Once you have gone through this process and you still can’t seem to find a way to purchase the domain, you can wait for the renewal period to come up for the domain. There is always a chance that the current owner will either forget to renew the domain, or choose to let it lapse, leaving you an opportunity to purchase it when it becomes available.
